The population in south Montgomery County continues to grow, thanks in part to companies like Exxon-Mobil moving their world headquarters to nearby SpringWoods Village. Tewbeleaux's Sports Bar, has found great success along with a few other eateries on Rayford Road in Spring, such as Pallotta's Mexican Grill (no relation to Pallotta's Italian Grill in Oak Ridge North). But while Pallotta's Mexican's success seems to be built simply on their convenient location, Tewbeleaux's success is definitely built on their superior quality food and great customer service. And it's that emphasis on fresh food and good service that has helped Tewbeleaux's become a favorite location for Fish and Chips, handily surpassing Tailgator's - the sports bar from which Tewbeleaux's was born.
We mention the emphasis on the great customer service because that is what you get at Tewbeleaux's in Spring. In this particular case, our server was prompt and attentive right up through the end of meal, though there was a delay in getting the check. We asked a passing server if she knew the whereabouts of our server as we hadn't seen her in a few minutes, and she said she would check on her for us. But in the few short minutes before our server reappeared, both the server manager and the general manager both came by our table to apologize for the delay. This being the only snag, albeit a very minor one, our dining experience was enjoyable. Also, we like that all of the staff wears a badge with their name and title (management) so it's easy to know who you are talking to. Based on the crowd of people there at 5:30 - 6:30 pm on a nice Saturday afternoon, Tewbeleaux's must be doing a lot of things the right way.
I decided to repeat the same menu item as I had in our previous review, a plate of FISH & CHIPS ($10.99); Atlantic Cod gently fried until flaky and delicious, served with homemade tartar or cocktail sauce and choice between the new house fried potato chips, waffle fries, or french fries. Knowing that it had been a while since I'd last enjoyed the fish & chips at Tewbeleaux's, I expected some difference was possible; and initially, I was a little disappointed in the serving size but, it turned out to be just enough food for an early dinner.
The Atlantic Cod had a great flavor and was cooked almost perfectly. There's only so much you can expect from Waffle Fries and these were crisp and tasty. The pricing was slightly higher than it was during our previous visit but, what hasn't become more expensive as time goes by and the increase was minimal. The light, crispy batter has the perfect amount of seasoning to accent the fresh fish.
The half order of Nachos ($5.99 + 2.99 for fajita chicken) was more than enough for my early dinner. Just as I remembered from the last few times we'd been in, the servings at Tewbeleaux's are generous, with many items on the menu being large enough for two to share. Granted, I realize I could have doubled my order for just $2 more, but I was glad I didn't, as I would have felt wasteful. And half-order or not, this was a lot of toppings; so much so that I ultimately asked for more chips to finish them off. The queso had a nice zing to it, and all of the veggies (save for the pickled jalapeños) were fresh. The chicken was tender and well-seasoned. All in all, everything I've tried at Tewbeleaux's far surpasses what I would expect to be served at your average "sports bar."
The Bottom Line
The chef at Tewbeleaux's works directly with management to review menu items and food preparation on a regular basis, and the results speak for themselves. When you're in the neighborhood, and Burger King or Taco Bell just won't do, Tewbeleaux's is where you can have some good food and a beer or two as well. Plus, this is a family-friendly dining establishment until 9:00 PM, when it becomes 21 and up with live entertainment. Billed as "...theperfect neighborhood hangout for the entire family or that late night party," they offer patio seating and over 30 HD TV's, including a few larger, projection TV's for your enjoyment. Tewbeleaux's is one of those far-away places (from our usual stomping grounds) that we feel is worth the drive.
