“What is with all of these cupcake venues showing up around The Woodlands?” asked the grandfather of my buddy. “It’s not anything new; we had’em when I was a kid.”
The first mention of the cupcake can be traced as far back as 1796, when a recipe notation of “a cake to be baked in small cups” was written in American Cookery by Amelia Simms. The earliest documentation of the term cupcake was in “Seventy-five Recipes for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats” in 1828 in Eliza Leslie’s Receipts cookbook. (credit wikipedia)
So it got us to thinking about the recent explosion of shops offering the mini baked cakes in The Woodlands.Frost Bake Shoppe, The Cupcakery, and Gigi’s Cupcakes have all appeared since early 2010 in The Woodlands. What would you say is one thing that they all have in common? Besides the obvious when it comes to these sweet treats – somebody has to go to them in order to get the cupcake. Not that it’s a bad thing, it is simply the way it is – they don’t deliver.
Not all things, your computer, your car, that pesky neighborhood cat, will stay the same and neither has the cupcake, or the way we get them. Cupcakes are available in a tremendous variety of flavors and frosted toppings, and are eaten as a dessert or even at a special occasion like a birthday party.
How often have you craved cupcakes late at night? Did you have any immediately available to you? Maybe you had a box of cake mix (chock full of preservatives and chemicals) in the cupboard? It’s 11:30pm and too late to be dealing with all that… So what do you do? Eat an apple? No, you want a cupcake and now would be a good time. Here’s the solution – not a work around, a real solution to end the cupcake hunger growing inside you.
Up Late Cupcake – a late night cupcake delivery company we just discovered yesterday. On a whim, we answered their request for a cupcake idea. According to their site, if they like it, you win a cupcake. Well it turns out, they really liked our idea, and we were flattered to learn they named one after us!
It’s a small shop right now, operated by Izzy, Jeff and Zach, featuring the baked goods of Bonnie (Izzy’s wife). Fresh, made-from-scratch cupcakes can be delivered right to your home or late night business (see map on their site for delivery area).
Vanilla w/buttercream frizzle, chocolate w/buttercream frizzle, Red Velvet w/cream cheese frizzle, Carrot cake w/cream cheese frizzle and our favorite (naturally) the “TWE! Chocolate Bombshell.” This cupcake is a moist and fluffy white cake with a chocolate truffle center and chocolate frosting. Oh, and the frosting… must mention the excellent frosting, after trying our first cupcakes tonight. The chocolate frosting is super light weight and looks like a swirl of ice cream sitting pretty right on top.
Delivery hours are Thursday – Saturday 9:00 PM – 3:00 AM. And oh, so reasonably priced at 4 for $8.00 (minimum) brought to your door during the time period when many of us are up late. A simple text via Twitter or call to 832 608-0294 will have them on the way. Availability may vary from day to day, and you should plan on calling 24 hours in advance for larger orders.
Up Late Cupcake Closed their doors in August 2012.
